Optos

Annual eye exams are vital to maintaining your vision and overall health. The Vision Source offers the optomap® Retinal Exam as an important part of our eye exams. The optomap® Retinal Exam produces an image that is as unique as you fingerprint and provides Drs. Palys, Opland & Semler with a wide view to look at the health of your retina. The retina is the part of your eye that captures the image of what you are looking at, similar to film in a camera.

Many eye problems can develop without you knowing. You may not even notice any change in your sight. But, diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal tears or detachments, and other health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure can be seen with a thorough exam of the retina.

An optomap® Retinal Exam provides:

 A scan to show a healthy eye or detect disease.

 A view of the retina, giving your doctor a more detailed view than he/she can get by other means.

 The opportunity for you to view and discuss the optomap® image of your eye with your doctor at the time of your exam.

 A permanent record for your file, which allows Drs. Palys, Opland & Semler to view your images each year to look for changes.

The optomap® Retinal Exam is fast, easy, and comfortable for all ages. To have the exam, you simply look into the device one eye at a time and you will see a comfortable flash of light to let you know the image of your retina has been taken. The optomap® image is shown immediately on a computer screen so we can review it with you.

Please schedule your optomap® Retinal Exam today!

For more information on the optomap® Retinal Exam, go to the Optos website at www.optos.com

Laser Vision Correction & Refractive Surgery

At the Vision source, we offer our patients the most advanced procedures in laser vision correction and refractive surgery. With many different procedures on the market now, our goal is to offer you the best procedure for your individual eyes. Custom LASIK with Intralase (bladeless surgery) is the most common refractive surgery procedure. PRK, CK (conductive Keratoplasty), implantable contact lenses such as the Visian ICL and phakic IOLs are other options available.  Custom LASIK uses the latest WaveScan technology which measures and corrects the unique characteristics of each individual's vision.

Most people with vision correction issues are wanting to know more about LASIK and whether it is right for them. Here is a brief description of the procedure;

A flap of the cornea is created by the laser (Intralase) and gently folded back. An Excimer Laser is used to reshape the cornea into a flatter shape (this is much like a contact lens corrects vision by forming a new shape on the cornea). The flap is then put back in place, acting like a natural bandage. The healing process is quick and the discomfort level is quite low.

People will often say that they did not feel anything, and could see well the very next day. Most people have improved vision in 24-48 hours. but it must be noted that each person will heal at a different rate. Vision, although greatly improved immediately after surgery, often continues to improve for some weeks, even months.

LASIK is not for everyone. People's eyes are different so even though you may have had a friend who has had LASIK, it may not be the best course of treatment for you. Other options are available such as PRK or the Visian ICL (intraocular contact lenses). If you are interested in laser vision correction, we will be happy to guide you in picking the right procedure and laser appropriate for you.  We also offer a Refractive Surgery Seminar on a monthly basis where you can learn all about refractive surgery and whether you are a good candidate.  A drawing for a FREE surgery is held at each seminar.

Financing options are also availlable and you may qualify for a discount with your insurance plan.

Dry Eye Assessment & Treatment

Dry eye is a common condition affecting millions of Americans in all regions of the country.Sufferers often complain of dry, tired eyes or of a foreign body sensation in the eye. Other symptoms include blurriness, scratchiness, burning, stinging and sensitivity to light.

Dry eye is caused from an inadequate wetting and lubrication of the eye. Blinking is the body’s way of spreading moisture over the surface of the eye. This natural tear film refreshes and protects the eye throughout the day. The average person blinks nearly 8,000 times a day, but that number decreases dramatically – by nearly half – during extended periods of time spent on concentrated near work such as reading, watching television or working on the computer. If the tear film deteriorates and the surface of the eye is not constantly refreshed, tiny wounds, or “micro-traumas,” will develop on the cornea causing the painful symptoms of dry eye.

Other factors such as aging, hormonal changes, certain types of medications, including antihistamines and antidepressants, smoke, pollution, wind, and environments with low humidity such as offices and airplanes also can damage the tear film and exacerbate symptoms of the condition.

As a Dry Eye Center for Excellence, our doctors provide the latest dry eye treatments.  These may include artificial tears, supplements, environmental changes, medications and punctal occlusion.

Corneal Refractive Therapy

Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT), also know as corneal reshaping and ortho keratology is the process of gently and temporarily reshaping the cornea with specially designed therapeutic contact lenses - while you sleep!  You wear the CRT lenses while you sleep. Then take the lenses out when you wake up. The result is great vision 24 hours a day - without the hassle of lenses during the day. And because you can stop the therapy at any time without permanent change to your eyes, you have ultimate control and flexibility in your vision correction.

Dr. Palys is certified in both the Paragon CRT and the Dreamlens.

Computer Vision Syndrome Analysis

Eyestrain, neck aches, burning eyes, blurred vision and headaches are some of the most common complaints we hear from people using computers. As the use of computers in the workplace and at home continues to grow, an increasing number of people are experiencing these symptoms which have come to be known as computer vision syndrome or CVS. Unlike printed material, with its excellent edge definition, images on electronic displays are made up of pixels with bright centers and fading, indistinct edges. The lack of clearly defined edges on the characters makes comfortable focusing virtually impossible. The effort to constantly refocus creates fatigue.

At the Vision Source, we employ the latest technology called PRIO - the only medical instrument designed to accurately diagnose CVS and to provide an accurate computer prescription. Along with workstation planning and proper work habits, prescription eyeglasses, contact lenses and vision therapy can go a long way in alleviating your symptoms and increasing your productivity.  Make sure you measure the distance from you eyes to your monitor before coming in for your exam.  This will allow our doctors to give you a more accurate prescription if needed.

Vision Therapy

Seeing clearly is not enough. For many people, reading and hand-eye coordination tasks can be very difficult. The act of sight not only includes ones eyes, but it also includes the neurological activity that processes the visual information. Throwing a ball or skiing down a hill, is a learned activity; to do either well takes practice. Those who do it best are those who started learning at the earliest age. Sight plays an important role in the learning of these activities. Sight is the steering mechanism; it is the main activity that provides feedback regarding what really is happening. We provide Vision Therapy to help individuals learn how to process visual information and develop better hand-eye coordination skills.
